I'm Brian Geis. I write security and compliance documentation, and I've spent most of my working life administering the systems and networks it governs.
I served six years in the U.S. Navy as a nuclear propulsion plant electrician aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt. I operated and maintained the plant's electrical generation and distribution systems, and managed documentation and revision control for the ship's reactor manuals.
After the Navy, I spent nine years as a systems and network consultant for small organizations, running their Windows servers, networks, and backups, and keeping them compliant with PCI DSS and HIPAA.
More recently I've earned CompTIA A+, Network+, and Security+, the CCNA, and the CISSP, and built windows-hardening (opens in a new tab), an open-source PowerShell toolkit for hardening Windows and the subject of the two control mappings on this site.
Good security documentation needs both: knowledge of how systems actually run, and the discipline to write for the assessor who will read it. That's the work I do now.
I live in northeastern Pennsylvania and work with firms across the United States.
